Activities planned for older Americans Month

Whether it be golf, bingo, bowling or a cake walk, Meridian residents ages 55 and older will be treated to a variety of free activities this month.
Jim Knowles, president of the Lauderdale County Council on Aging, Lorine Mosely, director of the Meridian Senior Citizens Center, and an 11-member committee have planned a lot of events to celebrate Older Americans Month.
Knowles, 73, a retired officer of the Mississippi Air National Guard, became part of the Lauderdale County Council on Aging in 1994.
Mosely has been director of the Senior Citizens Center since 1974. She's retiring this year.
Knowles said he believes staying active keeps him young and has helped him recover from a stroke. He said the Senior Citizens Center is a great place for older adults.
The month of events has grown over the years. More than 1,000 seniors are expected to attend a health fair and enjoy food and entertainment during the Catfish &Trimmings Luncheon at the Frank Cochran Center on May 9.
Many volunteers from the community will come together to pull off the luncheon, including members of the 186th Air National Guard who will donate their time to do the cooking.
Activities continue during the Month will include weekly bingo games each Thursday, a bowling tournament May 13 at Dixie Bowl Lanes, a golf tournament May 15 at Lakeview Golf Course, a walk-a-thon May 20 at Bonita Lakes Mall and a pool tournament May 21 at the Senior Citizens Center.
All events are free to senior citizens over the age of 55.
