Excellence in education

Ruby Capers, a sophomore in the Funeral Service Technology program at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, was chosen to be the 2003 recipient of the Mississippi Funeral Directors and Morticians Association's "Student of the Year" award.
Capers is a native of Putnam, Ala., and moved to Mississippi more than 20 years ago.
She made an early commitment in her life to helping others and enrolled in the nursing program at University of West Alabama. Capers later completed her nursing degree at Meridian Community College.
She is a registered nurse and has more than 25 years experience in nursing service. Ruby enrolled in the Funeral Service Technology program in August 2001. She is scheduled to graduate in May and will take her National Board Examination immediately after graduation.
She and her husband, James Capers, live in Meridian and are the parents of a daughter and five sons.
These Lamar Middle and High School students made the Honor Roll and the Principal's List for the third nine weeks.
The Principal's List includes students who made all "A's," the Honor Roll includes those who made all "A's" and "B's."
