Chuck Gordon and Jimmy Carle came through with a 63 to lead the field in the Annual Spring 4-Ball Tournament at Northwood Country Club.
The score was good enough for a two-stroke lead over Bo Welch and Joe Rush, who came into the club house with a 65.
Winston Powell and J.T. Williamson and the pair of John Rea and Chase Williams each finished out the round with a 67 to sit four shots back.
The bottom four flights will tee off at 8:30 a.m. to start the final round today. The Championship, First, Second and Third Flights will tee off at 1 p.m.
Gordon and Carle got off to a good start, as Carle birdied No. 3. Gordon birdied No. 7 and the duo each scored a birdie on No. 9.
Gordon gave the pair a boost on No. 12 with an eagle, and Carle followed with birdies on No. 14, No. 15 and No. 16.
After a bogey on No. 17, the pair closed out the round with a birdie by Gordon on No. 1, starting spots for the tournament varied throughout the course.
Tournament Chairman Gary Futch said the first day of the tournament was a success.
Eddie and Nicholas Brown are at 68 after the first round. Four pairs are tied at 69, and Dan Sollie and Robbie Garrett round out the Championship Flight after shooting a 70.
The Spring 4-Ball at Northwood is an annual invitation tournament and is well thought of around the area. The tournament has been successful in the past and this year seems to be no exception.
The tournament has a full field and will be broken down into eight flights for the final round tomorrow.
