Lauderdale County Extension Service is ready for Christmas

By By Beth Randall / Lauderdale County 4-H director
Dec. 8, 2002
I know Christmas is around the corner. In fact it will most likely be here before I am ready!
I just love this time of year holiday decorations, shopping, baking special treats, special church Christmas programs, and looking at holiday lights it is all good.
We are busy preparing for the holidays around the Lauderdale County Extension Service office. Each year Mississippi Homemaker Volunteer members and 4-H'ers make ornaments for the tree in our building's lobby. We have some very creative ornaments this year.
From all the ornaments, five winners were selected. This year's MHV winners: Rosemarie Lucovich, Doris Hopper, Georgia Snowden, Caroline Wilson and Irene Travnicek.
This year's 4-H winners: Sarah Burns, Drew Phillips, Lydia Burns, Justin Lucky, and Summer and Laura Lucky.
You can see these ornaments along with others displayed on the tree in the lobby of the Raymond P. Davis Annex Building.
4-H members from the various 4-H clubs in Lauderdale County also made ornaments to hang on a tree at Merrehope. These ornaments are special because they are made from birdseed and other goodies that birds like to eat on cold winter days.
So when you visit the Trees of Christmas at Merrehope next week, look to the little holly tree to the right of the driveway and notice the bird happily munching on their ornaments.
In addition to having a float in the Meridian Christmas parade, hosting parties, and participating in community service projects by 4-H Club members and volunteers, there is one more way we are preparing for the holidays.
Lauderdale County 4-H is hosting a Holiday Ornament Workshop on Thursday from 3:30 p.m.-4:30 at the Lauderdale County Extension Office. The cost is $2. To register, call the 4-H office at 482-9764.
Because the number of participants is limited, you will want to call soon. The workshop is open to all youth, ages 8 to 18, and we always have a great time.
I hope this holiday season you and your family will take time to reflect on the many blessings of the year. Enjoy the opportunity to spend time with friends and family and make great memories. I know I am looking forward to making gifts, playing games, baking and relaxing.
For more information on holiday safety and holiday ideas, stop by the Lauderdale County Extension Office (fifth floor of the Raymond P. Davis County Annex) and pick up a copy our Home for the Holidays booklet.
