Sherrill still believes in Walker

STARKVILLE Mississippi State football coach Jackie Sherrill still believes in tailback Dontae Walker and think he has an opportunity for professional football even though his college career has ended prematurely with the Bulldogs.
Sherrill and Walker met prior to Monday's practice and the two agreed that it was in the player's best interest to sit out the last game of the season and concentrate on the books.
So Walker won't be available to Sherrill Thursday night against the Ole Miss Rebels. The Clinton native has enjoyed two of his better outings against the Rebels with six touchdowns in the last two games.
Walker finished as Mississippi State's ninth-leading career rusher with 1,875 yards and is also ninth in rushing attempts with 417. He is fifth on the career rushing touchdown list with 22.
Sophomore Fred Reid has been listed at the top of MSU's depth chart at tailback since midseason with freshman Jerious Norwood getting increased playing time.
After giving a long list of banged-up Bulldogs during his Monday teleconference, Sherrill narrowed it down to two players who may not play against Ole Miss.
Senior wide receiver Terrell Grindle is doubtful with injuries to his finger and ankle, while freshman safety Rico Bennett hurt his toe and may not be available.
Sherrill anticipates that senior safety Josh Morgan who suffered a forearm fracture will play, but will be limited against Ole Miss.
Even though junior quarterback Kevin Fant was walking through the Shira Complex Tuesday afternoon with a heavy wrap on his ankle and knee, Sherrill said any sign of injury was not evident on the practice field.
