Sheriff's department investigates attempted theft of ATM

Nov. 21, 2002
The attempted robbery of an automated teller machine at a Highway 45 South convenience store shattered the building's front glass and left law officers searching for one or more suspects.
Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said deputies received an alarm call at around 3:20 a.m. today.
Calhoun said a truck stolen from the Ice Plant on Highway 11 South in Meridian was apparently backed into the front of the BP Outpost near the Clarke County line to break the store's glass front.
Calhoun said one or more people attempted to physically remove the ATM from inside the store. The suspect or suspects did not remove the machine and no money was taken.
Calhoun said that anyone with information about the incident can call the Lauderdale County CrimeStoppers at 917-8888.
