The Academy high school football playoffs enter week two. In opening round North Class A playoff action, Heidelberg drilled Central Holmes 49-7 while Wayne blanked Mississippi County 32-0.
Wayne improved to 7-3 with their opening round win. Matt Brown scored on runs of 12, 3,and 13 yards to lead the Jaguars. Brandon McDonald and Patton Stanley rounded out the scoring for the winners.
The WA offense played well but Walker was happy that this unit only had one turnover.
This week Johnny Walker's crew will have their hands full traveling five hours to Strider. Strider moved to 11-0 with an impressive 43-8 win over East Holmes (7-4).
Heidelberg improved to 10-1 with their win over the Trojans (5-6). Brent Welch, Matt Andrews, Blake Bass, Joe McLeod, Brody Bustin, and Jeremy Eason scored for the Rebels. Eason had an 86-yard kickoff return and a 35-yard run for scores.
Quarterback Brooks Lewis fired three touchdowns passes, and the Rebels ran for 262 yards.
This week Heidelberg travels five and one half hours to battle DeSoto, Arkansas. DeSoto (8-3) is coming off a close 6-0 win over Deer Creek (7-4).
Lamar at Hillcrest Christian
An early week sickness and rainy weather has limited the Lamar Raiders this week, but Raiders head coach Mac Barnes says his team is still anxious to play Hillcrest Christian this Friday in Jackson.
Barnes said injuries aside, the Raiders have had problems getting points.
Lamar is 6-4 and is assured a playoff game next week. A win would keep the Raiders at Grey-Cobb Field against either Starkville or Magnolia Heights. A loss would send them to Madison-Ridgeland.
Hillcrest, 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the division, needs a win in order to make the Division 1-AAA playoffs.
The Raiders will be without quarterback Drew Moffett who hurt his shoulder in the Copiah game. He has accounted 1,174 yards passing and 726 rushing with 15 combined touchdowns. Jeff Parke will assume much of the offensive burden. He had 126 yards in the Copiah game.
Either Lane Rush (713 yards rushing) or Scott Owen will take over for Moffett this week.
