LIVINGSTON, Ala. The Livingston High Cougars are thinking playoffs. Coach Scottie Jones' club can qualify for the Alabama 4A playoffs by beating Greensboro Public on Friday night at Livingston.
Both teams enter the Region 4-4A contest with identical records of 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the region. A win puts the Cougars in. A loss leaves them out.
Still, it's quite a turnaround from last year's 2-8 season. The Cougars evened their season record at 4-4 last week by beating Bibb County 28-20.
Quarterback Corey Speight has had consecutive games with a passing touchdown. Defensively, the Cougars depend on its top player in 6-foot-4 senior LaRon Moss.
Choctaw County
at Monroe County
The Andalusia Bulldogs came into Butler, Ala., last week and took care of any remaining playoff hopes for the Choctaw County Tigers with a 33-6 defeat. The loss drops the Tigers to 1-7 on the season and 1-5 in Region 1-4A play.
Andalusia head coach Paul Woolley, though, was complimentary of the Tigers.
Monroe County is 2-6 on the year and is 1-5 in region play. They present the Tigers their best chance at grabbing another win before the season ends next week at Leroy.
Southern Choctaw at Leroy
Second-ranked Southern Choctaw can effectively wrap up the Region 1-2A title by beating the Leroy Bears Friday night in Leroy, Ala.
Southern Choctaw is 7-0 on the season after beating Flomaton 34-14 in Bollinger last week. The Indians are 5-0 in region play. Leroy is in third place in the region at 5-1. The Bears are 6-2 overall. Two years ago, Leroy advanced to the 2A State semifinals.
Southern at Sumter Academy
The Eagles return home to host Southern Academy after beating Lowndes Academy 38-0 last week in Hayneville.
Sumter will take a 6-2 record into the game which comes two weeks after a surprising loss to Patrician in Butler.
Patrician at Warrior
Patrician steps out of AISA Region 2-AA play with a road game to Warrior Academy in Eutaw.
The Saints fell to eighth-ranked Marengo Academy 20-6 last week in Butler. The loss dropped the club to 3-5 on the season.
Brent Bonner scored the Saints' lone touchdown when he recovered a blocked punt in the endzone. Beau Meeks had the block.
Clarke Prep
at South Choctaw Academy
Clarke Prep visits Toxey's Jackson Field to take on the Rebels.
South Choctaw Academy dropped a tough 16-10 decision to Wilcox Academy last week. The Rebels are now 3-5 on the season.
Jared Linder scored the Rebels' lone touchdown on a 20-yard run. Rob Dahlberg had the PAT and later booted a 22-yard field goal. Landis Herndon led the team in rushing with 50 yards. Corey Johnson caught a 37-yard pass from Dahlberg.
Sumter County at Oak Grove
Sumter County takes on another highly ranked team when they travel to Oak Grove, Ala., on Friday.
Sumter County did not play last week. The Wildcats are 1-6 on the season and 1-5 in region play. Oak Grove is 7-1 overall and 5-1 in Region 4-3A. The Wildcats are led by running back Anthony Watkins who ran for 89 yards in a 49-0 loss to top-ranked Tarrant two weeks ago in York. Chris Walker had four receptions for 48 yards in that game.
