Public pressure works

Chalk it up to a willingness to do the right thing, public pressure, or whatever other motivation you think applies. The renovation work at Meridian's Fire Station No. 2 started last week and the atmosphere around the fire house is already brighter.
Decades worth of moldy grime has been chemically cleaned from air conditioning ducts and new units installed on Monday should help avoid that problem in the future. Living conditions have been improved for the Meridian firefighters stationed at the city's most decrepit fire house.
We credit the Meridian City Council with coming up with the $20,000 or so to get the work done. It was absolutely necessary. It was also an example of the public making their wishes known through letters to the editor, phone calls to their councilmen and in other communications. Local government works best when its officials listen to the people.
In the meantime, we hope planning is continues for a new No. 2 that is better able to accommodate not only the firefighters but also the future fire fighting needs of the city. The council charged Fire Chief Bunky Partridge with drawing up such a plan and we would encourage the council to set a deadline, lest the new station project linger too long on someone's "to do" list without actually getting done.
