Applause for
Sheriff Sollie
To the editor:
I, like others, applaud Sheriff Billy Sollie for keeping his composure during the meeting in which words were exchanged between the sheriff and one of our supervisors. Not only do I applaud the sheriff, but I have a great deal of respect for him. The sheriff has come up against many walls during his term in office, but has always handled matters in a respectable and Christian-like manner.
Thank you, Sheriff Sollie, for being someone my child can look up to.

I wonder why?'
To the editor:
I read in The Meridian Star recently where past President Bill Clinton was in California raising funds to help a Democratic candidate there get elected. Republican Congressman Chip Pickering invited our current president, Republican President Bush, to Mississippi to help Congressman Pickering raise funds to be elected.
To my knowledge Democrat Congressman Shows did not ask Democrat past President Bill Clinton to come to Mississippi to help him raise funds to get elected.
I wonder why …

What are Democrats hiding?
To the editor:
Political parties which aspire to lead this nation have an obligation to disclose their agenda before an election so the voters have a chance to consider, discuss and debate their positions. This is why the Democrats' refusal to say how they would repeal President Bush's tax cuts is so disappointing.
For months, Democrats in the Senate have refused to pass a budget, have balked at taking the necessary measures to cut wasteful spending, and now want to make the American people pay the bill by raising taxes.
Recently, Democrats called for an "economic summit" after the election, but won't admit that their agenda is liberal tax and spend policies. This is highly irresponsible on their part. What are the Democrats hiding?
If they're planning to raise our taxes by repealing President Bush's tax cut, then we have a right to know about it before the election.

Pledge petition
To the editor:
In response to the recent letter written by Antoine Otto regarding the current debate over the wording of the Pledge of Allegiance, I would like to direct everyone's attention to a Web site that may be of interest.
Recently, Rep. Chip Pickering and Sen. Trent Lott introduced an amendment to the Constitution that would, if enacted, permanently protect the current wording of both the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Motto. In support of this effort, several Christian organizations, including the American Family Association in Tupelo, launched a Web site titled www.WePledge.com.
The full text of the proposed amendment is listed at this site, which also provides each visitor the opportunity to sign a petition in support of the amendment.
I would urge all Americans who are interested in preserving these two important portions of our national heritage to visit the site and sign the petition.

Wake up,
Lauderdale County
To the editor:
Lauderdale County Citizens, when are you going to wake up and quit electing someone who shows his ignorance every time he opens his mouth. It has been embarrassing to watch the news this week and see someone make such a fool of himself on television. No wonder people from other states think we are a bunch of "illiterate trailer trash" that appears on the Jerry Springer Show.
Let's rise above this mentality and put someone in office who can work for the betterment of our county and state. I'm sure some of our fine citizens are out there saying "right on, Ray, don't let them big shots think they can push you around." But that is not what is happening. We as citizens are suffering because of these actions.
I am a concerned citizen living in the Zero Community and was born and raised in Lauderdale county.

Gallagher Creek:
What happened?
To the editor:
It was sad to read the top story in The Meridian Star on Thursday, Sept. 19, "Gallagher neighbors unhappy about creek." I have many fond memories of younger days spent exploring beautiful Gallagher Creek (we called it "Ditley Branch.")
I don't remember seeing sofas or household items strewn along that wonderful creek that was my playground. What changed?

Encouraging the
anti-incumbent vote
To the editor:
Politicians. Can't live with em and not so sure we can't live without em. There's the governor saying he created 39,000 new jobs. Doesn't say anything about the 78,000 he lost because Hyundai wouldn't buy his buddy's land in Pelahatchie. And there's old Chip his ads tell what a hero he was for (single-handedly) stopping the flood of imported Canadian Lumber, but he turned up his nose at all the textile jobs in Mississippi.
How about Ray Boswell. I'm ashamed to tell people I live in his district. Chucky (McRae) and his DUI are running this year also. How about all of those politicians who can't do anything about tort reform for 17 days now.
I tell you, I am going to vote against anyone with an (I) next to their name. And if a race is unopposed, I am going to write in "A Black Angus Cow." I encourage you to do the same. It's no wonder we are a laughing stock among other states. We do it to ourselves.
