The Jackson Prep Patriots came to Meridian after a tough loss last week and controlled the game to hand the Lamar Raiders their first defeat of the season 45-21.
The Raiders were unable to stop the Patriot offense and Jackson Prep jumped out to a big first-half lead and held on for the victory.
The Patriots scored on their first possession of the game after only three plays. Luke Addison ran for a 25-yard gain on the second play of the possession and scored on a 39-yard run to make the score 7-0 with 10:44 left to play in the quarter.
The Raiders came back and answered with a touchdown on their second play from scrimmage. After losing 14 yards on their first play, the Raiders connected on a 94-yard pass play. Quarterback Drew Moffett pitched the ball to Lane Rush and Rush found Daniel Harrison with a long pass. Harrison outran the defense for the long touchdown. The PAT by Tommy Edgerton made the score 7-7 with 9:57 left in the first quarter.
Prep answered on its next possession. The Patriots drove 75 yards on 11 plays to take back the lead. Sam Love carried the ball in from three yards out to make the score 14-7 with 5:58 left in the quarter.
After a Lamar punt, the Patriots again took over possession and drove for a touchdown. Addison found Chase Thompson with a shovel pass and Thompson did the rest. He ran for 14 yards to make the score 21-7.
Lamar drove to near midfield in the second quarter but was unable to reach a first down on a fourth-and-one play. Prep took over the ball at the Lamar 47 and once again drove for the score. Thompson again scored on a shovel pass from Addison. The play went for a 25-yard touchdown and the Patriots took a commanding 28-7 lead.
The Raiders answered with a nice drive to cut into the Prep lead. Harrison made a great diving catch on a pass by Moffett to move the Raiders deep into Patriot territory. Lamar capped off the drive on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Moffett to Rush. The extra point by Edgerton made the score 28-14.
Jackson Prep finished out the second quarter with 10 unanswered points. Hunter Owen made a 22-yard field goal to make the score 31-14. The Patriots then put an exclamation point on the first half by scoring with six seconds left. Addison found Swayze Waters on a 44-yard pass to make the score 38-14 at the half.
Prep scored on its first possession of the second half to increase the lead. After a pass interference call gave the Patriots a big fourth down conversion, backup quarterback Austin Ellis scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper. With 3:17 left in the third quarter, Prep led 45-14.
The final points of the night were scored by the Raiders in the fourth quarter. The Raiders scored on another long pass to Harrison. Moffett hit Harrison with a short pass and the senior wide receiver went 55-yards for the score. The touchdown and PAT made the final score 45-21.
