Justin Catlett and Benji Carpenter carried a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Harry Lackey Labor Day Golf Tournament Monday at Briarwood Country Club and it was a good thing for them that they did.
Catlett and Carpenter held off Rex Gentry and Colton Tisdale for a one-stroke win after both teams shot 67 over the final 18 holes.
Catlett and Tisdale finished with a 54-hole total of 201, some 15 strokes under par. Gentry and Tisdale had a 202.
The Harry Lackey tournament championship was Carpenter's second. His previous win was with Sean Covich.
Carpenter will now turn his attention to another favorite sport.
Catlett and Carpenter birdied the first hole to grab a two-stroke lead.
Gentry and Tisdale got to within one with a birdie on No. 3.
Both teams birdied Nos. 4 and 5, parred Nos. 6 and 7, birdied No. 8, and parred Nos. 9 and 10.
Gentry and Tisdale suffered a bogey on No. 11 to go down two strokes.
Catlett and Carpenter birdied No. 12, but still lost a stroke as Gentry and Tisdale recorded an eagle on the par-5, 491-yard hole.
After both teams birdied No. 13 and parred No. 14, Gentry and Tisdale pulled even as they birdied No. 15.
Both teams parred No. 16 and both suffered bogeys on No. 17.
Catlett and Carpenter parred the final hole with Gentry and Tisdale taking a costly bogey.
Third place went to the team of Jack Combest and Willie Frazier at 203. They had birdies on Nos. 5, 12, 15, 16, and 18 and a bogey on No. 6 to finish Monday's round with a 4-under 68.
Joey Mabry and Tony Polizzi took fourth place after shooting the best score in the final round of play. They had a 54-hole 205 after closing with a 6-under 66. The duo had birdies on Nos. 2, 4, 8, 9, 12, and 15.
Fifth place went to the team of Joel Nelson and Chris Clark at 207. They had birdies on Nos. 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 to go with a bogey on No. 1 in shooting a 67 on Monday.
The championship flight played from the blue tees while all others played from the white tees.
