Excellence in education

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Samford University conferred degrees on 807 seniors from 21 states and two foreign nations during commencement May 25. Those students graduating from the Meridian area were Emily Carolyn Abney, Virginia Elizabeth Isbell and Brian Joseph Smith.
Ami Patel of Meridian, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chhotalal Patel, received a bachelor's degree from Emory University in Atlanta at its 157th commencement ceremony.
COLUMBUS The following Mississippi University for Women students, all from Lauderdale County, received degrees in May: Hollie Camp, Rochester B. Anderson and Kimberly Ann Burrage.
Jaime Broadhead, a 2002 graduate of Meridian High School, and the daughter of Dale Broadhead, has been awarded a Merit Scholarship at the University of Georgia.
Casie Page is one of 127 Mississippi University and college students appointed by the state Baptist Student Union to serve as a summer missionary in Alaska.
Page, son of Ronnie and Laurie Page of Newton, is a student at East Central Community College. Missionaries will have all expenses paid by fellow students during their term of service. All students serve approximately 10 week terms alongside career missionaries.
Adrian Spidle is one of 127 Mississippi University and college students appointed by the state Baptist Student Union to serve as a summer missionary in Taiwan. Spidle, daughter of Michael and Doris Spidle of Meridian, is a student at Mississippi College.
All students serve approximately 10 week terms alongside career missionaries.
Toby Barker is one of 127 Mississippi University and college students appointed by the state Baptist Student Union to serve as a summer missionary in Burkina Faso. Barker, son of Robert and Cindy Barker of Meridian, is a student at the University of Southern Mississippi.
All students serve approximately 10 week terms alongside career missionaries.
David Palmer is one of 127 Mississippi University and college students appointed by the state Baptist Student Union to serve as a summer missionary in Central and Southern Asia. Palmer, son of Henry and Jan Palmer of Meridian, is a student at Meridian Community College.
All students serve approximately 10 week terms alongside career missionaries.
Joseph A. Denson of Meridian, son of Otha Lee Denson and Shirley Marie Denson, has been selected by Tougaloo College as one of the country's most outstanding campus leaders by Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Denson joins an elite group of students selected from institutions of higher learning throughout the United States.
Jessica M. Gist, a sophomore at Meridian Community College is the recipient of the 2002-2003 Dixie Highway High School Scholarship for the fall and spring semesters. This $200 award, funded through the MCC Foundation, is given to a relative of a Dixie Highway School Alumnus.
Gist is a graduate of Newton County High School where she was a member of the Beta Club and was editor of the annual. A member of the First Baptist Church in Newton, Jessica is a tutor at Oakland Heights Elementary School. She is pursuing a degree in elementary education.
