Mac Haik, one of the most outstanding football players and students to ever come out of Meridian High School, will be inducted into the Ole Miss M-Club Hall of Fame Saturday in Oxford. A 1964 graduate of Meridian High School, Haik signed to play football at Ole Miss. During his college career, he earned All-SEC and All-American honors for his play at split end. After college, Haik was the No. 1 draft pick of the Houston Oilers. One achievement: He caught the first touchdown pass in the Houston Astrodome. After four years with the Oilers, he went into private business.
Raleigh Odom's bases loaded, two-out single drove in pinch runner Quatrecia McShane with the winning run as Northeast Lauderdale defeated Meridian 4-3 to win the 13-team Meridian Invitational Tournament Saturday at the Sammie Davidson Complex. Northeast stunned top-ranked West Lauderdale 7-4 in one semifinal, while Meridian steamrolled East Central 10-0 in the other. Northeast went 5-0 in the tournament to improve to 11-1.

GREENVILLE Ken Krahenbuhl twirled a six-hit shutout and Carlos Capellan went 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead the Greenville Bluesmen to a 10-0 win and a three-game sweep of the Meridian Brakemen in the Big South Leauge Championship series Monday night at Legion Field. The championship was the second in as many years for the second-half champion Bluesmen, who beat Columbia three games to one in last year's BSL Series.
The Meridian High Lady Wildcats have a solid core of veterans back from last years's 5A state softball champions. But Monday night against Quitman, it took the effort of a first-year starter to help Thad George's team to victory. Right-center fielder Dixie Pigford, the 11th and last-place hitter in the MHS order, slapped a three-run, inside-the -park home run in the bottom of the sixth to give Meridian (5-1) a 10-8 victory at Northeast Park.

LORMAN Alcorn State University's baseball team went from 20-24 to winless overnight, thanks to a miscalculation, an ineligible player and locked-away records. The Southwestern Athletic Conference on Monday ruled senior third baseman Gary Leach's eligibilty expired prior to the spring semester. Leach played in all but one of the Braves' 44 games, missing a non-conference 12-2 loss to Southern University.
