It could not have been a prettier day for golf on Saturday as a packed field gathered for the 16th annual Briarwood Country Club Mixed Scramble.
After the first round, the combination of Doug Hartley and Tammy Hartley sit atop the leader-board, shooting a 63, one stroke up on the duo of Leigh Phillips and Doyle Bryan 64.
There are a host of others hot on their trail as five teams are just two strokes back, including Lou Hart and her husband Allan.
Hart is the current Meridian Community College golf coach and demonstrated why she holds the position by helping her team to the leader board.
" We are going to have to bring our 'A' game tomorrow", said Tammy Hartley. This is the second time the Hartleys have been to Briarwood for the annual event. They placed third in the second flight of last years event.
"This is just a beautiful tournament", Hartley said. The Hartley's are not strangers to winning, having placed first in the York (Ala.) Mixed scramble two years ago. "We putted well today and did not bogey a single time", she said. The Hartleys managed to drop nine birdies, including a 50-footer. "It was pure skill", said Doug Hartley jokingly.
Play resumes at 8:30 a.m. today, with the leaders teeing off at 1:30p.m.
