Gowen takes lead at Junior Amateur, Powell in fourth; Quitman's Ivy 2nd in Group B

Day two of the Mississippi Golf Association's Boys Junior Amateur saw Oxford's Greg Gowen shoot a second straight two-under-par 70 and take a three-stroke lead on Wednesday at the Mississippi State University Golf Course.
Gowen's second round 70 broke a three-way tie after the first round and gives him a three-shot advantage with a four-under, 140. The three-day tournament concludes today at the MSU Golf Course.
Michael McElroy of Madison, who had a share of the lead after the first round, fell three shots back with a second round 73. He is one-under at 143 for the tourney and is tied with Pass Christian's Nick Beale, who shot a two-under 70 on Wednesday to come in at 143.
Meridian' Winston Powell is in fourth place after firing a one-over 73 on Wednesday. Powell had a 72 in the first round to make it three-over for the tourney at 145.
Kevin Jones, who was the third golfer tied for the first-round lead, fell into a tie with Powell in fourth with a 145. Jake Lambert of Madison is tied for sixth with Michael Campbell at 146. Campbell also shot a 70 on Wednesday.
Derrick Smith, who was 12th after the first round, had a tough day, shooting a 90. He will compete in the second flight where he is fifth at 165 behind leader Beau Edens' 163. Blake Smith is 13th in the second flight at 171 after coming back Wednesday with a solid four-over 76.
Groups C (12-13-year-olds) D (10-11) and E (9-and-under), wrapped up play after the second round.
Meridian's Clay Bounds shot the round of the day with an even-par 72 but had to settle for second place in the Group C Tournament. Freddie Janneck of Madison, who had a 71 in the first round, shot a 76 to finish at 147.
Bounds was one-stroke back at 148 following a 76 in the first round. Meridian's Elliot Tramontana was third with a 151 after shooting a 79 on Wednesday.
Brock Hollingshead of Meridian won the Group C first flight by shooting a 78 in the second round. The score was eight strokes better than anyone else in his flight and was the winning margin. Hollingshead had a 165 (87-78) total. Nicholas Brown of Meridian was fifth in the flight at 182 (91-91).
In Group D, Laurel's Joseph Henderson won with a round two score of 40 to give him an 81 for the tourney, five strokes better than Tyler Gann of Pass Christian.
Easton Key of Meridian was fourth at 92 (45-47). Will Fuchs of Meridian finished in a tie for sixth with a 96 (49-47). Scott Bounds was ninth at 106.
In Group E, Blake Breedlove of Canton won with consecutive 39s to card a 78. Nicholas White of Meridian had a 94 (50-44) for fourth place.
The Group B Tourney (14-15-year-olds) will go to a third round like Group A.
Lee Jones took the lead with a two-under 70 which gives him an even-par 144 for the tournament.
Joshua Ivy of Quitman moved up to second place after firing a one-over 73 on Wednesday. He has a two-round score of 147, three strokes behind Jones.
First round leader Matt Fast of Hattiesburg shot a 76 on Wednesday to join Ivy and Matt Burrow in second at 147.
Meridian's Reid Kennedy is in a four-way tie for sixth after shooting a second-round 76. He is at 150, six strokes behind Jones.
