The Meridian 13 year-old All-Stars secured a Babe Rush State Championship by shutting out Vicksburg 9-0 to bring home the crown Sunday at Meridian Community College's Scaggs Field. Meridian did get an outstanding performance from pitcher Corey Hart. Hart pitched a complete game with ten strikeouts and allowed only two hits in seven innings of work for Meridian.
LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England The massive crowd that swallowed up David Duval walking up the 18th fairway in the British Open didn't faze him. He had seen it all before only it was always someone else's party. Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh at the last two Masters. Woods at St. Andrews last year, when the closest Duval got to the silver claret jug was on the flight home. On Sunday, a celebration long overdue was all his. Duval refused to let the British Open turn into the 18-hole shootout everyone expected, seizing control with a rock-solid game that carried him to a 4-under 67 and gave him the prize that had eluded him for the past four years.

GREEN BAY, Wis. Brett Favre is after another title for his long and impressive resume: NFL's highest-paid player. Favre said his agent is flying into Green Bay on Thursday night in hopes of wrapping up a contract extension that the sides have been working on for nearly two years. The impending deal is worth between $44 million and $49 million over seven years and includes a signing bonus of between $10 million and $11 million.
SEBASTOPOL One cliche which will live forever in the annuals of sports folklore relates to a team snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. But few fans ever actually witness such actions occur at a sporting event. Fans attending Tuesday's District 4 Dixie Majors baseball tournament got a good idea of what such a game looks like when Richie McAllister's towering two-run homer to center capped a seven-run uprising in the sixth giving West Lauderdale a come-from-behind 10-8 victory over Philadelphia American.

Some things just weren't meant to be. Oak Grove scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap off an exhilarating 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Meridian in the championship game of the Dixie Pre-Majors state tournament being played at John Moss Field. With the win, Oak Grove advances to the Dixie Pre-Majors World Series at Paris, Texas, beginning Aug. 1.
