The Meridian Dixie Majors and Pre-Majors are both headed to the Dixie Youth World Series next weekend. The Meridian Majors defeated Benton 4-1 Thursday night in Taylorsville to win the state championship, while the Meridian Pre-Majors defeated Laurel-Jones County twice Thursday in Laurel to claim their state championship. The Pre-Majors, who were beaten by Laurel-Jones County Tuesday night, needed to beat the host team twice to win the state title. Meridian won the first game 5-3 and took the decisive Game 2 7-3.
MADISON So much for that theory about no one caring who wins all-star games. Madison Central High School played host to the 52nd annual Bernard Blackwell All-Star Football Classic here Friday night, and 48 minutes was not enough to settle the issue as the North and South teams battled to a 7-7 tie in front of approximately 4,000 fans.

In this age of super-rich superstars, Barry Sanders has pushed the bar to yet another level in the NFL. While such other big-name players as Buffalo's Bruce Smith and Carolina's Kevin Greene continued to hold out, the Pro Bowl running back on Sunday agreed to the most lucrative contract in the league with the Detroit Lions. Sanders came to terms on a five-year deal reportedly worth $34.56 million.

In most youth all-star tournaments across the nation, just about everyone on the squad can and does pitch. The Pre-Majors state tournament going on at John Moss Field is no different. In a tourney where well over half his squad has pitched, Monday night Meridian coach Jerry Crenshaw found a combination that worked. Johnny Bell gave up just one run in his first tourney appearance, then Paul Phillips came on for over three frames of sparkling relief work as Meridian eliminated Cleveland 6-2.

Wilt Haggard
Witt Haggard hopes to follow in his older brother David's footsteps. David Haggard is a star basketball and baseball player at Lamar School.
Witt plays four positions for the Meridian 10-year-old Cal Ripken All-Stars.
Haggard said the reason behind Meridian's success in winning the state title is its pitching.
Haggard was pleased with his hitting in the tournament.
