With the start of fall soccer practice less than a month away, new Meridian Community College head soccer coach Alex George added one more player to his roster with the signing Thursday of Lamar School's Heath Rush.
Rush, a stopper for the Raiders, is the 21st signee to the MCC soccer program which will field a womens' team for the first time this fall. The MCC men have been one of the top junior college programs in the country having won the national championship in 2000 and finished fourth at last year's nationals in Tyler, Tex.
Rush joins a strong group of local players to sign with the Eagles. He is one of five players who played for the Meridian Ballers, a team that won the gold medal in the State Games of Mississippi's Adult Men 19-and-under division.
George was glad to add Rush to the Eagle fold.
Lamar went 9-3 last season and earned a MPSA post-season berth. One of the losses was to West Lauderdale, a team that was coached by George before he took the MCC job.
At MCC, Rush said he will probably move from stopper to defensive fullback. He is also preparing for the challenge of college soccer.
Rush is the son of Karen and Sonny Rush. He will pursue a degree in business/sports management.
George said he will spend Saturday watching the Mississippi High School All-Star soccer matches. He has three players in the boys match. Rogers, along with Clinton's Brian Bledsoe and Chris Duncan, are MCC signees and will play for the South All-Stars.
