LAUREL Wooten-Legion Field did its impersonation of San Franciso's Candlestick Park Monday night and early this morning at the Dixie Pre-Majors State Tournament.
Heavy fog caused the umpires to halt the winner's bracket game between host Laurel-Jones County and Carthage this morning around 12:35 a.m. The umpires, tournament officials and coaches decided to officially suspend the game five minutes later with L-JC holding an 8-1 lead and batting in the top of the sixth inning.
The Contest will be resumed today at 4 p.m..
Two rain delays in Monday's first game resulted in the tournament schedule being delayed by about two hours. After Meridian's 11-8 win over Lawrence County and Hattiesburg's 13-2 trouncing of Tylertown, the L-JC vs. Carthage contest- scheduled for an 8 p.m. start- began around 10:50 p.m. After the L-JC vs. Carthage game is completed today, the loser of that game will turn around and play Hattiesburg at 5:30 p.m. The winner of the L-JC vs. Carthage game will meet Meridian tonight at 8 p.m.
Meridian scored six runs on two hits in the second inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and take control against Lawrence County.
Daniel Boyd had a two-run triple and Randy Dively an RBI single in that inning. Meridian led 8-3 after four innings, 9-6 after five innings and 11-7 after six.
Boyd tripled twice and had three RBIs for Meridian. Dively homered and singled, while Blake Hedrick, Lee Blackburn, Justin Scott and Kedrick Martin added singles.
Boyd went 4.2 innings and posted the win. Ryan Rollins finished up in relief.
