A two-hit shutout by Austin Newell paced the Meridian 12-year-old All-Stars to the Cal Ripken Baseball State Championship on Tuesday night in New Albany.
Meridian was forced to play a second and deciding title game after Long Beach had beaten them in 10-6 in the first game.
Newell came through going the distance in the 4-0 victory. Meridian now advances to the Southwest Regional at Eagle Pass, Texas. They become the fourth North Meridian Optimist Club team to win a state title this summer and the fifth to earn a berth to the Southwest Regionals.
Meridian opened the 10-team tournament by beating New Albany 9-0. They then whipped Central Mississippi 9-3. Next was the 11-inning win over Vicksburg.
In Tuesday's second game, Rock McGowin had the key hit with a two-run double.
The Ripken 12-year-old Southwest Regionals are set to begin on July 26.
