BATON ROUGE, La. It was a long hard day, but it apparently paid off for the State of Louisiana and the New Orleans Saints. Saints owner Tom Benson, Gov. Mike Foster and negotiators for both sides spent five hours hammering out a deal that is expected to keep the team in New Orleans until at least 2010. The agreement in principle reached Monday would provide the Saints with $12.5 million in guaranteed operating cash to assure the team's financial stability. The state would also continue what was called "an escalating inducement package" until a new stadium or renovated Louisiana Superdome is functional.
WIMBLEDON, England The message of Goran Ivanisevic's improbable Wimbledon championship is clear: When it comes to men's tennis, expect surprises. Pete Sampras lost there for the first time in five years, Andre Agassi squandered a semifinal that he was two points away from winning and Pat Rafter did the same in Monday's final. Ivanisevic competed his climb from wild-card entrant to Wimbledon champ with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6, 9-7 win over Rafter in 3 hours, 1 minute.

LAS VEGAS Mike Tyson's harshest critics got what they wanted from Nevada boxing regulators. It may also turn out to be what Tyson wanted, too. Tyson expected severe sanctions for biting Evander Holyfield's ears, and he got them on Wednesday when the Nevada State Athletic Commission revoked his boxing license and fined him $3 million. But what appears to be a lifetime ban might actually turn into the quickest route for Tyson to return to the ring possibly as early as next year.

CHICAGO The Atlanta Braves have the Chicago Cubs' number. It's zero. The Braves are 7-2 against the Cubs this season, with five shutouts. The squeezed the noose a little tighter Thursday night when they extended the agony to 12 innings before winning 2-0. Mark Lemke's two-run triple in the 12th ended it. A quartet of Atlanta pitchers held the Cubs to three hits, all against starter Charlie Leibrandt, who worked the first seven innings.

The Answer …
Once. In 1961 the game went nine innings ending in a 1-1 tie. The game was called due to rain.

Kotreece Bender
Kotreece Bender's Newton High School Lady Tigers won a bronze medal in last month's State Games of Mississippi girls basketball competition.
But it was back in May where Bender, a rising senior, really set herself apart by winning medals of a different kind. Bender was the only area athlete to win two gold medals in the MHSAA State Track and Field meet held at Hughes Field in Jackson.
Bender won both the Class 2A girls shotput and discus.
Bender won the 2A shot with a heave of 37-feet. She won the discus at 110-feet-11.
Basketball, however, remains Bender's favorite activity.
Bender also has a basketball bloodline. Her mother, Evelyn, played professional ball.
