Excellence in education

JoAnn Brady of Quitman is the American Business Women's Association Scholar at Meridian Community College.
The $500 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by the ABWA Pinnacle Chapter to encourage deserving students in their pursuit of an education.
Brady is a freshman in the Health Information Technology Program. She is a single parent with two children, ages 12 and 17.
SCOOBA More than 60 students were honored during East Mississippi Community College's annual Awards Day for the spring semester, held on the Scooba campus.
Casey Asmus of Meridian received the Outstanding Zoology Award. Morgan McPhail of Collinsville received the Phi Theta Kappa award for All-Mississippi First Academic Team, recognition for receiving the Guistwhite Scholarship and the athletic award for being the female sophomore with the highest grade point average.
Students from Kemper County who received awards were: Crystal Harbour of DeKalb, who received the Outstanding General Biology Student Award; Kenyetta Moore of Scooba, who received the Outstanding Clinical Performance Award in the Health Care Assistant program; Ashley Knight of Scooba, who received the Outstanding Anatomy and Physiology Student Award; and Jennifer Campbell-Knox of Scooba, who received the All State Honor Choir Award.
Also honored were Kaywanisa Friloux of Scooba, who received the Most Enthusiastic and Cooperative Spirit Award in the Health Care Assistant program; Piper Sharp of Porterville, who received the All State Honor Choir Award; Melanie Key of DeKalb, who received the Phi Theta Kappa All Mississippi Second Academic Team Award and the Collegian Award; and Bonnie Parr of Kipling, who received the Fine Arts Award.
Others honored included Cheryl Beaty of Scooba, who received the Outstanding Band Award; George Spinks of DeKalb, who received the Collegian Award; Debbie Kirk of DeKalb, who received the Outstanding Academic Performance Award in the Health Care Assistant program; Andrew Pilgrim of DeKalb, who received the Freshman Chemistry Award; Lyndall Wood of Scooba, who received the Fine Arts Award; and James Rush of DeKalb, who received the Business Technology Award.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Dr. Marcus Armon Dempsey of Gilbertown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dempsey of Gilbertown, was one of 56 students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry who received the doctor of dental medicine degree during commencement on June 2.
Dempsey plans to become an associate with J. Randall Kornegay in Prattville. Dempsey is a 1997 graduate of the University of Alabama with a bachelor's degree in biology.
While at UAB, Dempsey joined the Psi Omega Dental Fraternity; joined the American Student Dental Association; and received the Birmingham District Dental Society Award. Dempsey is married to Charity Dempsey.
ITTA BENA Ricardo Gillispie and Lillian McFarland, both of Meridian, received bachelor's degrees from Mississippi Valley State University during the 2002 spring commencement exercises.
Gillispie received a bachelor's degree in computer science. McFarland received a bachelor's degree in mathematics.
MOBILE, Ala. Gregory L. Joiner of Collinsville was named to the University of Mobile dean's list for the spring 2002 semester.
In order to make the dean's list, a student must maintain a 3.5 grade point average while taking at least 12 semester hours.
LIVINGSTON, Ala. Leigh Ann Morrow of Meridian has been awarded a Community College Trustee Scholarship to attend the University of West Alabama.
The award is based on academic achievement and leadership potential. Morrow, who attended East Central Community College, plans to enter UWA this fall.
Elizabeth Harmon, a graduate of West Lauderdale High School, was a double winner at the International Science and Engineering Fair held recently in Louisville, Ky.
She received a $20,000 scholarship from Midway College and a fourth place Grand Award of $500 for her research on pressurized wood.
Harmon is one of seven Mississippi students to win on the international level. She plans to attend Mississippi State University this fall.
