Ripken tourney enjoys first day

The Cal Ripken 9 &10 year-old state tournament got kicked off on Saturday at Phil Hardin Park with six games played on the day.
Six more games will be played on Sunday with teams starting to be eliminated out of the losers' bracket.
On Saturday, Orange Grove beat Ripley 16-0 in the first game and then North Jackson beat Oxford 6-1. Jeff Davis beat Stone County in the best game of the day, 10-9 and then Vicksburg beat Orange Grove 8-3.
On Sunday, Oxford will play Olive Branch at 9 a.m. in an elimination game. At 11 a.m., Ripley will face Stone County in another losers' bracket game. Orange Grove will face the Oxford-Olive Branch winner at 1 p.m. followed by New Albany versus the Ripley-Stone County winner. The winners' bracket games get underway with Vicksburg facing North Jackson at 5 p.m. Meridian and Jeff Davis finish up the day with the 7 p.m. nightcap on Sunday.
Orange Grove 16
Ripley 0
Orange Grove jumped all over Ripley in the first game of the day and scored 11 runs in the first inning on its way to a 16-0 victory.
Joey Harris and Willie Walker had back-to-back home runs for Orange Grove in the inning.
Orange Grove scored two runs in the second and three in the third to put the game away.
Ripley finished the game with only three hits. Orange Grove had only eight hits in the rout.
Joey Lacy picked up the win in the game while Coty Childs took the loss. Harris had two homers while Walker had one to lead the Orange Grove hitting attack.
North Jackson 6
Oxford 1
North Jackson scored five runs in the second inning and held on to win the third game of the day 6-1 over Oxford.
Wally Wells had a single, Blakely Terrell had a double and Paul Davis had a single in the big inning to blow open the game for North Jackson.
Oxford had only three hits in the game. Brandon Blake had a single and double to lead in the loss. North Jackson had only four hits in the game.
Peyton Johnson picked up the win for North Jackson while Blake took the loss.
Jeff Davis County 10
Stone County 9
Jeff Davis scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Stone County 10-9 in one of the best games of the tournament so far.
In the bottom of the sixth, Denzell Wilks doubled to start the inning. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game. William Daley came through with an RBI double to win the game for Jeff Davis.
Stone County took advantage of an error and got a double from Spencer Wilson to take the lead in the top of the sixth inning but could not hold on for the win.
The teams swapped leads throughout the ballgame. Jeff Davis scored three in the bottom of the first but Stone County scored six in the third to take the lead. Jeff Davis answered back with four in the fourth. Stone County then took the lead in the final inning before Jeff Davis took the lead for good in the last half of the final frame.
Wilks had a single and two doubles for Jefferson Davis County. William Daley also had a single and two doubles. Rueben Duckworth picked up the win on the mound.
Scott Thames had a double for Stone County and Wilson had a single and double. Austin Archer took the tough loss.
Vicksburg 8
Orange Grove 3
Vicksburg scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on for the 8-3 win over Orange Grove.
Orange Grove scored five runs in the top of the first inning but could not hold on for its second victory of the day.
Vicksburg outhit Orange Grove 10-5 in the ballgame.
Chris Snow had a single and double for Vicksburg. Dylan Bond had two singles for Orange Grove. No other hitter had multiple hits.
Dylan Wooten picked up the win in the game while Dalton Parker ended with the loss.
