YABA State Tourney underway

By By Mike Carson / Bowling Columnist
July 2, 2002
The 37th Annual YABA State Tournament is off and running. The first weekend of competition was held Saturday and Sunday at Dixie Bowl Lanes. A recap of the first weekends' activity may be found elsewhere in today's sports section. Tournament action will continue for the next two weekends as over 300 youth bowlers and their families come to Meridian to compete in this yearly championship.
A busy summer schedule will continue later in July when the 1st Annual Meridian Bowling Camp will be held at Dixie Bowl. Slated to run July 22-26, participants in the camp will be able to learn the basics of bowling from some of the area's top bowlers from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. In addition to the camp, participants will be eligible for special drawings to be held on the final day of the camp. The camp is open to both adults and youth. The cost is $45 per person to attend. You may sign up at the counter at Dixie Bowl or call Betty Dorough at 482-2220.
Stan's Classic Tournaments will be presenting a Handicap Doubles Tournament beginning August 3-4 and running each weekend before concluding on Labor Day. First place is guaranteed $3,000. The team entry fee is $60 ($30 per bowler). Multiple participation is allowed, meaning you may bowl with up to three partners at the same time. The entry fee with additional partners in the same shift is $25 per bowler. Shift times will be 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Sundays and Labor Day.
Women will receive a handicap of 90% of the difference of 210. Men's handicap will be 80% of the difference of 210. You must show your ABC/WIBC card at the time of your first entry. Optional events will include High Game Pots and Brackets.
Believe it or not, the 2002-2003 Fall &Winter season is now less than six weeks away from starting. League schedules will be available shortly, so begin making your plans for the new season. League secretaries will be contacting returning teams and members to see if you need bowlers for your teams. If you need help filling vacancies let your league secretary know or call Dixie Bowl at 483-2283 for assistance.
I hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th of July. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
