Drivers: Road work not the problem

By By Fredie Carmichael / staff writer

Some motorists who have traveled through work-zone areas of Interstate 20/59 near Meridian said Saturday that roadwork should not have caused recent traffic accidents.
Waymon Davidson, a truck driver from Dallas, said the problem is speeding by truck drivers in Mississippi.
Davidson transports steel across the South. He said the highway work-zone areas are well-managed and signs warn motorists well in advance of construction.
Other travelers agreed. John DiPiero of San Antonio, Texas, said highway signs warning motorists of road work are easy to see and keep drivers alert.
But Mark Schontz, who has been driving his tractor trailer for more than 30 years, said that motorists are sometimes in a hurry and can contribute to work-zone crashes.
