STARKVILLE During a long, disappointing bus ride from Omaha, Neb., to Athens, Ga., Ron Polk's world was turned upside down. Polk's now-former Georgia team had just been eliminated from the College World Series when he heard startling news coming out of Starkville and Gainesville, Fla. "When I found out my good friend Pat (McMahon), had gone to the University of Florida, I knew my life had changed," he said. Indeed, it has. Polk officially replaced his replacement Tuesday, reclaiming the Mississippi State baseball program that he built into one of the best in the country during a 22-year stint in Starkville.
Hilary Allen doesn't plan on missing a beat as the new athletic director at Meridian Community College. That was obvious by the ringing of his telephone Tuesday. "Obviously, Meridian Community College has a very successful athletic department and outstanding coaches," said Allen, who is replacing Michele Smith as AD. "We plan on continuing with that success of playing at the highest caliber of athletics we can play at." Allen, who came to MCC in 2000 as the women's head basketball coach, said he will continue to lead the Lady Eagles program as well as take on his added responsibilities.

It took a scorecard playoff to settle the issue in Thursday's 5th Annual WTOK/Rush Coaches Golf Tournament on the par-70 Lakeview Golf Course layout. When the dust had cleared the Meridian High team of Mac Barnes, Larry Weems, Pat Ross and Geary Jackson took home the top spot. The foursome fired a round of 11-under-par 59. Also shooting a round of 11-under-par 59 and placing second was the BellSouth team of Chris Bryan, Stan Fisher, David Burns and Jamie Bryan. The tournament consisted of 30 four-person teams.
New Mississippi State head coach Pat McMahon will be one of the highest-paid baseball coaches in the Southeastern Conference. The state College Board on Thursday approved McMahon's $122,000 annual contract, which includes $82,000 in base pay and $40,000 from other sources, including MSU's summer baseball camp, radio and television show revenue and Bulldog Club donations.

LAS VEGAS Evander Holyfield tattooed an age-old boxing story on the face and body of Larry Holmes Friday night. All boxers eventually fall prey to Father Time, and Holmes, a 42-year-old grandfather, did just that in the desert heat. Holyfield remained unbeaten and retained the undisputed heavyweight title with a unanimous decision.
The Answer …
McDyess, who played for Alabama, made the team in 1995.
