PHILADELPHIA Allen Iverson has the rest of the summer to heal. Already playing through numerous aches and bruises, Iverson had to overcome another injury in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The league's MVP hurt his right hip in a collision with Kobe Bryant in the first quarter, but still scored 37 points. Iverson, however, couldn't lift his team past the Los Angeles Lakers, who beat the 76ers 108-96 Friday night to capture their second straight championship.
Jason Smith knows his first trip to "the show" will likely be a short one. But it's something the Sumter County, Ala., native will never forget. Smith, 23, a AAA player with the Chicago Cubs was called up Thursday from Des Moines, Iowa. There was some question about the status of starting shortstop Ricky Gutierrez, who has been out with a concussion since June 6, and Cubs manager Don Baylor needed a backup. So, the former Meridian Community College standout was in a Chicago uniform Friday when the Cubs hosted the Minnesota Twins.

BETHESDA, Md. Teh list of characters was the same, and so was the outcome shock for Tom Lehman, tears for Colin Montgomerie and another U.S. Open Championship for Ernie Els. Els, the 27-year-old South African with a rhythmic swing and a knack for rising to the occasion, won his second U.S. Open in four years that ended the talk of Tiger Woods winning the Grand Slam. Els shot a 1-under-par 69 at Congressional Country Club under intense pressure brought on by four players all of them in the last two groups jockeying for the lead over the final 12 holes.
Billy Jones and Richard Ezell birdied the second hole of sudden death to capture the two-day Lakeview Golf Course Two-Man Scramble Sunday afternoon. Jones and Ezell (62-64) finished regulation play deadlocked with Earl Sikes and Johnny Boykin (62-64) at 14-under-par 126 on the par-70 Lakeview course. Both teams parred the first hole of sudden death. The issue was decided on the second playoff hole as Jones and Ezell birdied, while Sikes and Boykin made par.

Jeff Reardon did what he always has done. Reardon set the all-time record for saves Monday night, retiring the New York Yankees in the ninth inning of a 1-0 Boston Red Sox victory. Reardon's 342nd save broke Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers' mark. "My heart was pumping from the fourth inning on. I was really nervous in the bullpen," Reardon said. "I wanted to get it over with. I wanted to get it at home."
