Raiders take second place

The Lamar School boys tennis team took second place in the MPSA Overall Tennis Tournament played in Jackson on Thursday.
Class AAAA powerhouse Jackson Academy took first with 12 points, while Lamar was second with four and Madison-Ridgeland Academy was third with three points out of the 12 teams competing in the one-day event.
Each qualifying participant had to win two matches on Thursday morning to advance to the championship match in the afternoon.
Lamar's Frank Marascalco and Stanton Lauderdale reached the finals in the No. 2 Boys Doubles division, falling to Jackson Academy's Will Mosby and Tyler Stacy 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.
Marascalco and Lauderdale hammered the Humphreys Academy duo 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, before taking a thrilling three-set win (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) over Class AAAA foe Pillow Academy in the semifinals.
In the No. 1 boys singles Lamar's Wade Covington rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win before falling 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals Lamar's No. 1 boys doubles team of Wilson Kahlmus and Lane Rush won 7-6, 1-6, 6-1 in the first round, before falling 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.
In mixed doubles action Katie Pearson and Pat Phillippi fell 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in the first round.
In girls No. 1 singles action Lisa Swartzfager fell 6-1, 6-0, while in the No. 2 singles Sara Michelle Nicholson won 6-0, 6-0 in the first round before falling 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Kelsey Cobb and Amy Swartzfager won 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of girls doubles, before falling 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.
