VERONA, N.Y. Laila Ali scored a majority decision over Jacqui Frazier-Lyde on Friday night as the daughters of two of boxing's greats slugged it out for eight rounds at Turning Stone Casino. Only Joe Frazier was at ringside Muhammad Ali had a prior commitment and he watched his oldest daughter fight a game fight. This was easily the toughest bout either fighter have had in their brief careers. And it was fought at a fierce pace, with both women slugging it out in the middle of the ring almost incessantly.
BROOKLYN, Mich. Jeff Gordon continued his march back to the top of NASCAR on Friday, and Shawna Robinson officially started her drive into the history books. Gordon, on a resurgence after a disappointing 2000 season, turned a lap of 188.250 mph around Michigan International Speedway to win the pole for the Kmart 400. It was his third pole this season and 36th of his career three of which have come on this 2-mile oval. That ties him with Alan Kulwicki for the track record. But the feat was over-shadowed by Robinson, who qualified 32nd. When she takes the green flag on Sunday, Robinson will be the first woman to start a Winston Cup race since 1989.

The West Alabama men's and women's rodeo teams had a frustrating weekend at the NCAA Rodeo finals in Rapid City, S.D., scoring no points as a team. However, two UWA competitors did reach the final round in their respective events. Jud Gully, a freshman from Scooba, was sixth in the nation in the calf roping. Gulley's time of 8.2 was the best of the championship round. Jenny Kent, a junior from Brewton, Ala. was 11th in goat tying. West Alabama came into the national finals off its most successful season ever. The UWA women were Ozark Region champs and entered the finals ranked No. 1 in the nation. The UWA men finished second in the Ozark Region in 1997.
SALT LAKE CITY Karl Malone has redemption. John Stockton has Utah even with the mighty Chicago Bulls in the NBA Finals. Given a chance to relive his nightmare at the foul line in Game 1, Malone made two free throws with 18 seconds to play to held the Jazz to a 78-73 victory Sunday night, squaring the best-of-seven series at two games apiece. Stockton did the rest shooting, stealing and, of course, passing Utah to a 9-0 run over the 10 minutes.

Meridian Community College baseball coach Corky Palmer was all smiles Monday morning. In an age where college coaches strive to find solid student-athletes, Palmer's most recent signee defines the term well. West Lauderdale standout Cary Luke, a starter for four years and on three state championship teams for Jerry Boatner's Knights, put his name on the dotted line Monday to play for the Eagles next season.
