Eagles place sixth at Phoenix

Meridian Community College finished strong in the 2002 NJCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship at Palm Valley Golf Club at Phoenix, Ariz., Friday, placing sixth in the 18-team tournament.
MCC's Clinton Hales edged Eagle teammate Daniel Boles and another player from Temple (Texas) College for a berth on the all-tournament team. Hales and Boles both finished the 72-hole event at 293. Boles fired a 4-under par 68 in the final round and MCC turned in a team score of 290.
MCC also got a four-day 301 from Josh Martin, a 306 from Brandon Laird, and a 320 from Cameron Hunt.
Shelton State Community College of Tuscaloosa, Ala., won the tournament by a single stroke over Tyler (Texas) Junior College. Shelton had a 1,162 to edge Tyler's 1,163. Pope Spruiell of York, Ala., is a member of Shelton's team. Third place went to Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College at 1,173, John A. Logan (Ill.) College was fourth at 1,186, and South Mountain Community College of Phoenix was fifth at 1,189.
