    MARY JANE LYLE
LOUISVILLE Mary Jane Lyle, well-known interior designer, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, in Corinth on her 90th birthday.
The daughter of Joseph William Lyle and Lula Mae Brown Lyle, she was born in Lauderdale County and lived most of her life in Louisville. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Joseph William "Jodie" Lyle Jr., and a sister, Elizabeth "Libba" Lyle Ray.
Survivors include her brother, Jack Brown Lyle of Birmingham, Ala.; four nieces; a nephew; and several great-nieces and nephews who fondly remember her as "Janie."
She attended Judson College, where she pursued a degree in art and graduated from the University of Mississippi, transferring there when she was told that teaching was the only career for a woman in her day. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. However, her teaching career was short-lived when the principal at Louisville High School told her in her first year that, teachers are not allowed to dance.' She promptly hung out her shingle for "Mary Jane's," enjoying a career in interior design for more than 60 years.
Her shop quickly became a mecca for clients from a wide area for selecting fabrics, home furnishings, antiques and accessories that she carefully and artfully chose and arranged. Her genius in the field of color was recognized early in her career and became her trademark. She decorated many homes, offices and businesses throughout the South and was awarded the prestigious honor of becoming a lifetime member of the American Society of Interior Designers.
A graveside memorial service will be held in Louisville on Saturday, June 8, at 11:30 a.m. at the Masonic Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home of Louisville is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church, 73 Sam Houston Way, Lexington, VA 24450, where ancestor Matthew Lyle was one of the founders; or Winston County Library, 301 West Park St., Louisville MS 39339; or a charity of choice.
    HUBERT I. ETHRIDGE
