Hundreds of city workers exchanged their shovels and mowers Wednesday for forks and knives as the group gathered at Bonita Lakes for the annual Public Works Picnic.
Larry Adams, a veteran public works employee, said he always enjoys meeting with co-workers at the annual picnic.
Before the lunch, Public Works Director Monty Jackson presented several awards to public works employees. Tommie Irby, the city's assistant public works director, received the department's Employee of the Year award.
Irby has worked for the city for more than 35 years and was named assistant public works director, in charge of the street division, earlier this year.
After the awards ceremony, Mayor John Robert Smith spoke to the workers.
