HOOVER, ALA. A game-winning inside-the-park homer. Several surprising pitching performances. A pair of down-to-the-wire games. It was just another day in the life of the Mississippi State-South Carolina rivalry. Joey Collums and Brandon Medders combined on an eight-hit shutout to lead Mississippi State to a 1-0 win over the Gamecocks Saturday night and into the Southeastern Conference tournament championship game. The Bulldogs (35-22) will be seeking their first SEC tournament title since 1987 against LSU, a 12-6 winner over Ole Miss today.
So who says you can't come back home? Former Wildcat standout and professional football player Dexter McCleon enjoyed some familiar sights Saturday as he held his second youth football camp at Meridian High School's Ray Stadium. A Meridian native, McCleon was a consensus All-American selection and Super Prep Dixie Player of the Year while playing at Meridian High School. McCleon had just finished a training camp with the Rams before coming to Meridian for Saturday's camp.

Mississippi State has to settle for the host role and No. 2 seed at the NCAA Mideast Regional. When the brackets for the eight NCAA regionals were released Monday, the Bulldogs (41-18), who have lost six of their last 11 games, were one of just two host teams not given No. 1 seeds. ACC regular-season champion Georgia Tech will be the No. 1 seed when the NCAA Mideast Regional gets underway Thursday at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville, Miss. The Mideast is the only regional with five 40-win teams.

Meridian High's adjustments at the plate paid off with a big adjustment in the win column. The Wildcats struggled with Biloxi breaking ball pitcher Justin Brown when they were swept in a late regular season doubleheader at Biloxi. But in Tuesday's 5-3 win in the first game of the best-of-three South State championship series, the Cats took a different approach. Patient bats, timely hits and solid pitching helped Meridian improve to 36-6 on the season, while Biloxi dropped to 27-8.

Otis Tisdale
Otis Tisdale was true to his word. During last Friday's weigh-in for Saturday night's boxing card at the Silver Star Hotel &Casino. Tisdale, a heavyweight, said he was going to whip Chester "Hurricane" Hughes.
In what was the best of the televised bouts from the Fox Sports' Sunday Night Fights, Tisdale pulled out the biggest win of his career beating Hughes in an eight-round decision.
The Charlotte, N.C. boxer improves to 18-6-1 with the decision. He has now won nine straight decisions. Many of the Fox commentators questioned the strength of Tisdale's victims but he made a believer out of Hughes.
