Indian River takes juco softball crown

KISSIMMEE, Fla. Indian River Community College of Fort Pierce, Fla., captured the 2002 NJCAA Fast-Pitch Softball National Championship with a 5-2 win over Utah Valley State College Saturday afternoon at the Osceola County Sports Complex.
Indian River finished 61-7, while Utah Valley concluded its season with a 48-15 mark. Utah Valley battled back from a first-round loss to reach the championship game.
Indian River's Tiffany Ore was voted Most Valuable Player of the tournament with Indian River coach Dale Atkinson receiving Coach of the Tournament honors.
Also named to the 2002 all-tournament team are Ekaterina Eronina of Midland (Texas) College, Amber Garlington of Gulf Coast (Fla.) Community College, Kristy Miller of Utah Valley, Dione Meier of Galveston (Texas) College, Jacquie Rothey of Indian River, Jessica Reader of St. Louis-Meramec, Cynthia Turek of Indian River, Crystal Parry of Utah Valley, Lacassa Hill of Gulf Coast, Belinda Renzello of Utah Valley, Ebony Gray of Indian River, Charmaine Johns of Chattanooga (Tenn.) State, and Crystal Krafft of Gulf Coast.
Utah Valley opened Saturday's play with a 5-0 victory over Midland, 50-16.
Utah Valley then sent Gulf Coast Community College of Panama City, Fla., packing with a 4-3 win. Gulf Coast finished 47-13.
