At this time of the year the word "cold" never comes into play, but the conditions were nothing but cold for the 2002 Briarwood Member-Guest Tournament. The annual event drew 79 teams and a loaded leaderboard after the first round of action.
Germany was paired with Johnny Grace to fire a first round 70, but the real story was the group they were paired with on the day. Robert Smith and Billy Jones teamed up to score a tournament leading 62.
Rex Gentry and Joel Nelson also join the the top of the pack with a 62 to set up the final round of action. The final round flights with begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The championship flight consists of other great teams as well. Robby Garrett and Mike Easterwood fired a 64 to stand tied at second place with Jon Hamm and Jon Jackson to make up the championship flight.
Six teams are tied for third place to make the leaderboard even more interesting. Some of those teams include Dan Kerr and Gene Hogan, Jack Combest and Steve Nelson, and Al Tynes and Jason Anders. All players shooting 73 or higher will make up the 1:30 flight except for Steve Timbrell and Willie Frazier as that pair will hit the tee at 8:30. Other notable scores from the tournament included Dennis Linton and Al Jones with a 66 and Buddy Davis and Robert Sanford with a 67. Cliff Henderson and Hoot Gipson lead the senior category with an opening round 68 to round out the scoring on the day.
