Lauderdale County officials are closer to collecting more than $200,000 in unpaid taxes from an Illinois company that brought equipment into the county.
Tax Assessor Jimmy Slay said Tuesday that contact had been made with Murphy Brothers of East Moline, Ill., concerning payment of a $217,711.80 tax bill.
Until now, the company had not responded to attempts to collect the debt, Slay said.
State law allows a county to tax heavy equipment such as cranes brought into the county from outside the state for the time it is in the county. Slay said some of the equipment remains in the county at a work site near Lockheed Road in Marion.
