East Mississippi Community College pitcher Lee Boyd was nearly perfect on Thursday night. But the one mistake he did make was a costly one.
Jones Junior College's Josh Sullivan belted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning to lead the Bobcats to a 2-1 win over EMCC in the first round of the Region 23 Division I Baseball Tournament played at Meridian Community College's Scaggs Field on Monday night.
Boyd struck out 10, walked none and limited JCJC to just five hits.
Jones starter Matt McAlpin, now 9-4 on the year, matched him with another gem, going the full nine innings as well and striking out five, while allowing nine hits and three walks.
The win pushes Jones, now 28-22 on the season, into today's second round game against Mississippi Delta at 7 p.m. MDCC reached that game with a 6-2 win over host Meridian.
The other game on Thursday saw Delgado explode late to beat Gulf Coast 10-2. Delgado plays MCC at 4 p.m. today, while EMCC and Gulf Coast meet at 1 p.m.
The six-team, double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday.
While his team won the game, Glaze knows his club was on the verge of getting beat.
Perhaps the biggest opportunity that East Mississippi had but couldn't cash in on took place in the bottom of the second inning when the game was still scoreless.
Drew Powell tripled into the right-field corner to open the inning. After a ground out to third, Matt Minchew walked to put runners on the corner. The Lions then were planning a squeeze bunt, but McAlpin saw the runner break early and stepped off the mound and gunned Powell out at the plate. A ground out then ended the inning.
EMCC took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Wade Whitaker led off with a single and later scored on a double to left by Ben Mason.
Jones answered in the top of the inning. Craig Bush led off with a single, and after a sacrifice bunt and a fly out scored on Sullivan's homer.
Sullivan had two hits to lead JCJC, while Whitaker had two for EMCC.
Glaze said that he was a little concerned that his team might be flat after the high of winning the MACJC State Championship on Monday.
Delgado 10
Gulf Coast 2
The Dolphins, now 42-9 on the season, scored four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to win the game by the eight-run rule.
But despite the eight-run win by Delgado, the game was tight through the first six innings.
The Dolphins scored single runs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead, before Gulf Coast and Delgado swapped runs in the fifth to make it 3-1. The Bulldogs, now 21-23, added another single run in the sixth to cut it to 3-2.
But Delgado got into the Gulf Coast bullpen in the seventh. The Dolphins used five walks and two hits to score four runs in that inning.
Chris Bourgeois (9-0) gave up 10 hits but picked up the win for DCC, while Brandon Hollingsworth earned his second save.
Matt Graziano led Delgado at the plate with two doubles and three runs scored, while Nathan Meiners had two hits and two RBIs and Jeremy Helton drove in three runs with two hits.
Ricky Smith had a double and single for Gulf Coast, while Bernard Williams had two hits. Brandon Erwin (4-6) took the loss on the mound.
