The Lamar School boys and girls tennis teams captured MPSA AAA state championships on Wednesday at the Ridgeland Tennis Center in Jackson, with four doubles teams and three singles players advancing to today's MPSA Overall Tournament.
The Raiders were extremely impressive in the doubles categories, winning four of five possible state championships, while also picking up one singles title.
Sara Michelle Nicholson won the No. 2 girls singles championship by defeating her opponent from Indianola Academy 6-4, 6-3. Nicholson won her semifinal match by the score of 6-0, 6-1 over Bayou Academy.
Pat Phillippi and Katie Pearson won the mixed doubles title with a grueling three-set victory (6-3, 6-7, 6-2) over Indianola Academy. Phillippi and Pearson cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over the Heritage duo in the semis.
Wilson Kahlmus and Lane Rush won the No. 1 boys doubles title 6-2, 6-4 over Manchester Academy, while taking a 6-1, 6-3 win over North Delta in the semifinals.
Lamar's No. 2 boys doubles team of Stanton Lauderdale and Frank Marascalco beat the Heritage pair 6-4, 6-1 to win the championship, after downing Indianola 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.
The No. 2 girls doubles team of Kelsey Cobb and Amy Swartzfager won the title with ease, downing Indianola 6-1, 6-1. The semifinals proved to be tough for the pair, as they dropped the first set to the Oak Hill duo before rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win.
Seventh-grader Wade Covington finished second in No. 1 boys singles, losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in the finals. He rolled to an easy 6-1, 6-3 win over Wes Hill of Heritage in the semis.
Fellow seventh-grader Jimmy Epps lost 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals of the No. 2 boys singles competition.
Lisa Swartzfager lost in the No. 1 girls singles finals by the score of 6-4, 6-4. She won her semifinal match 6-2, 6-2.
