DECATUR East Central Community College Associate Degree Nursing instructor Sherri Cantey was recently inducted into the University of Southern Mississippi's Gamma Lambda chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society. A native of Winston County, she is a graduate of Louisville High School and Meridian Community College. She is pursuing a master's degree in nursing from USM.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. Brandy Brown of Meridian was among 729 students named to the honor roll at Alabama State University for the spring semester.
Brown was honored at the 2002 Honors Day Convocation, held on April 12 in the Joe L. Reed Acadome. To qualify for the honor roll, students must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average on a scale of 4.0.
ALCORN STATE The Alcorn State University Honda Campus All-Star Challenge team won first place in this year's regional competition, and fourth out of eight in the division.
Overall, 64 teams from historically black colleges and universities participated in the competition last month.
Members of the team are: Cedric Burrow, captain, a junior English major from Memphis, Tenn.; Reggie Ross, a senior communications major from Grenada; Robert Walker, a freshman biology major from Meridian; Bryant Mitchell, a sophomore computer networking major from Jackson; Jessie Guin, a freshman biology major from Port Gibson; and William Greer, a sophomore economics major from Carthage.
Alcorn State professor Lawrence Konecky is the team's coach.
For 12 years, Alcorn State University has participated in the quiz bowl competition sponsored by American Honda. Game play consists of two teams who face off with "toss up" questions on a wide range of subjects. Bonus questions are asked when toss-up questions are answered correctly. Topics include history, science, sports, popular culture, religion, music, politics, geography and black history and culture.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Michelle Williamson of Centreville, Ala., the daughter of Marsha Herrington Hendrix and Mike Mason, has been inducted into the Xi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi at the University of Alabama.
Individuals are invited to membership in this largest of education honor societies on the basis of high academic achievement, worthy ideals and evidence of leadership attributes. Kappa Delta Pi was founded in 1911. The Xi Chapter was established in 1922. Internationally, KDP has over 400 chapters and 57,000 members.
Jared Doner of Bailey has been named a United States National Award Winner in History and Government by the United States Achievement Academy. Doner, who attends West Lauderdale High School, was nominated for the award by teacher Richard Zeagler.
Doner will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook. He is the son of Tim and Janet Doner of Bailey and the grandson of Jesse and Ethel Doner of Collinsville and Ben and Sandra Vick of Bailey.
