Whether it's snacking on food, enjoying live entertainment or dumping public officials in the dunking booth, MayFest 2002 will be a day for the entire family.
Set for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick School, 2700 Davis St., near downtown Meridian, this year's theme is "A Family Celebration."
The event will begin with a silent auction.
Items up for bid include an overnight stay at Silver Star Hotel &Casino with a dinner at Villa 16 West. Also up for grabs: artwork donated by Cartmell Gallery and gift certificates from D.T. Grinders and The Rustler.
Auction items will be set up in the school's main hall. Those bidding can check back at 2 p.m. to see if they won.
Food will be available, including authentic Philippine cuisine in the school cafeteria. Dance troops from Carol Merrill Academy of Dance will perform, as well as karate students from Jeff Anderson's Shotokan Academy.
If you feel someone needs a "time out," the Upscale Jail is the perfect place.
Anyone can have an "arrest warrant" issued for just $1; sixth-grade students will find the person and dump them in the "jail." The prisoner must then pay a fee to be released.
And don't forget the dunking booth.
There, you can try to dunk the Rev. Elvin Sunds, pastor at St. Patrick Catholic Church; Videt Carmichael, the state senator from Meridian; or Ward Calhoun, a major with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.
St. Patrick School has been part of Meridian since 1863. The school has hosted the festival for about 30 years.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the private school, which is open to all students, no matter what their religious beliefs.
