The tight three-way race for the Northwood Spring Four-Ball title continued in the final round Sunday, and in the end, it was putting prowess that settled the issue. The tandem of Joey Mabry and Tony Polizzi captured the 2001 Northwood Spring Four-Ball Tournament with a two-day total of 130, an impressive 12-under par. The team comprised of District Attorney Bilbo Mitchell and Asst. D.A. Dan Angero finished with a 66, an 11-under tally.
HUNTSVILLE With Montevallo defeating Lincoln Memorial earlier in the day, the University of West Alabama baseball team went in search of its first conference tournament berth since 1995. But Alabama-Huntsville spoiled the Tigers' tourney hopes by completing the three-game sweep with a 13-7 win on Sunday. The loss moved UWA's record to 25-25 overall and 11-10 in GSC play as the 2001 campaign came to an end.

OXFORD Van Chancellor, the only head women's basketball coach the University of Mississippi has ever had in the Southeastern Conference, is leaving for his shot in professional coaching. Chancellor confirmed Tuesday night that he is leaving Ole Miss after 19 seasons to become the head coach ad general manager of the Houston Comets of the new Women's NBA. He has agreed to a three-year contract, teams of which were not disclosed.
DECATUR Left-handed pitchers can be devastating. That was never more true than Tuesday in Newton County Academy's Mississippi Private School Association Class A playoff doubleheader with University Christian Academy. Flames southpaw Jonathan Van Every dominated game one, giving up just two hits and fanning 12 in UCA's 4-1 victory. Lefty Toby Pinson then took the hill for the Generals, giving up only four hits and two runs in Newton's 8-2 win in the night cap. Pinson walked three and struck out five, as he snapped UCA's 13-game winning streak. The two teams play the rubber match of the three-game series Thursday at Jackson's Mississippi College.
