Nestled away amidst the scaling Mississippi pines that surround a 700-acre fishing lake in East Central Mississippi lies what its owners call a southern luxury: Lake Eddins.
Lake Eddins, a residential/resort community in Jasper County near Pachuta, is more than 15 years old and is home to some 600 country-style homes.
The lake and community were developed in 1986 by a family of three from Clarke County.
Country living
Lake Eddins is one of a handful of residential communities in East Central Mississippi offering lakeside lots. And, Eddins said, the community is near capacity.
Lots at Lake Eddins are from one-half acre to one acre in size and prices range from $7,000-$35,000 for a lot. Lakeside lots are the most expensive.
When the Eddins first looked at the more than 1,000 acres of southern woodland property in the wilds of Jasper County, Eddins said it was untouched and there was no lake.
Fisherman's paradise
The lake is fed by Pachuta Creek and stocked by American Sports Fish with Florida largemouth bass, white perch and bream.
Eddins said the fishing lake is one of the biggest selling points of the community. And it is home to four-time national champion fisherman Paul Elias.
Elias offers his endorsement to the community, saying, "Within the near future Lake Eddins will be one of the hottest bass fishing lakes in the Southeast."
Eddins said many bass weighing 10 pounds or more have been caught in the lake.
Golf nearby
Fishing isn't the only thing that attracts people to build in Lake Eddins, he said.
A short drive away in Quitman is a new 18-hole golf course: Quitman Country Club.
Eddins promotes the course in conjunction with his development because he spent many days helping clear the land for the course's expansion.
Eddins said Lake Eddins atmosphere offers a perfect place for retirees.
