George Polizzi, an avid golfer and retired employee of the Norfolk Southern Railway Company, is this year's chairman of the Jimmie Rodgers Memorial Golf Tournament.
Plans for the tournament are scheduled to be announced at a press conference this morning. Hosted by the Jimmie Rodgers Memorial Foundation, the annual event will be held on the first day of the Jimmie Rodgers Festival, Thursday, May 9, at Briarwood Country Club.
Money raised from the golf tournament is used to help fund the annual festival, scheduled for May 9-11 this year.
Polizzi, of Meridian, said Thursday he agreed to chair the tournament because the festival is a community asset worth preserving. He was also close friends with the late Jimmie Dale Court, a grandson of Jimmie Rodgers.
This year's tournament is sponsored by Rush Foundation Hospital.
The tournament will be a six-person scramble with an entry fee of $450 per team. Polizzi said the entrance fees have been lowered in an attempt to get a full contingent of teams, preferably 18 to 24.
Hole sponsorships are being solicited from area businesses for $100 per hole.
Brown also said organizers want to expand the tournament in an attempt to help return the Jimmie Rodgers Festival to the bigger event it once was.
This year's music festival includes scheduled performances by The Inspirations, The McKameys, Steve Forbert, The North Mississippi All Stars and Confederate Railroad.
Tickets for all concerts at the festival are $10. To purchase tickets, call the Lauderdale County Tourism Bureau at 482-8001 or toll-free at (888) 868-7720. For more information about the golf tournament call George Polizzi at 679-1434 or Briarwood Country Club at 681-6185.
