USM sweeps 49ers

The University of Southern Mississippi's bad run in extra-inning games changed on Sunday as Brad Wilcutt blasted a three-run homer in the top of the 11th inning, lifting the visiting Golden Eagles to a 7-5 win over Conference USA foe Charlotte.
With the win USM completed a three-game sweep over the 49ers and kept its one-game Conference USA lead over Houston, which dropped two-of-three games to East Carolina over the weekend.
USM is now 21-11 overall and 9-3 in C-USA play. Prior to Sunday, USM had lost its last three extra-inning games, two of them conference losses to Houston.
In the top of the 11th Carlos Velasquez led off with a single and Allen Winningham advanced him with a sacrifice bunt. After Jeff Cook was intentionally walked, Wilcutt launched his fourth homer of the year. Charlotte scored one run in the bottom of the 11th, but it wasn't enough.
USM returns home to host five games this week, hosting Southeastern Louisiana at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and New Orleans at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Louisville then comes in for a three-game C-USA set beginning on Friday.

Brandon Moorhead struck out a career-high 12 hitters on Sunday afternoon to lead Georgia to a 9-2 win over Mississippi State.
Georgia (17-10, 8-4 Southeastern Conference) kept the Bulldogs (17-11-1, 6-5 SEC) to just two hits.
Moorhead (2-0) struck out 10 in the first four innings to help earn the win. Joey Collums (2-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs.
Bulldog fans turned out in massive numbers for the three-game series, which MSU won 2-1. The turnstile count for Saturday's regionally televised game was 11,860, the sixth-largest attendance at Dudy Noble Field. The weekend series drew 22,269, the third-largest conference weekend series attendance.
Mississippi State hosts Samford at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Mississippi Valley Stat at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday before hosting Arkansas in a three-game Southeastern Conference series beginning on Friday.
MSU is currently in third in the SEC West with a 6-5 mark, while Alabama leads the way at 9-3. Ole Miss is second at 8-4, while Auburn is at 6-6, LSU is 5-6 and Arkansas comes in at 4-5.
