Cougars beat Lake, drop one to Rockets

DECATUR The Newton County Cougars split a pair of games Saturday afternoon with Lake and Neshoba Central. The Cougars downed Lake 11-0, however they fell 8-4 in the night cap to the visiting Rockets.
Newton County jumped out to a 1-0 lead, behind two hits in the first inning to put the Cougars up over Lake.
In the second inning, Tyler Haggan belted a lead-off triple for the Cougars. Ryan Loper then ripped a single up the middle to score Haggan and put the Cougars up 2-0.
In the third inning, Brandon Ezell left the park for a solo homer for the Cougars, to make the score 3-0. Adam Bout doubled up the middle, and was later driven in by Matthew Boggan to put the Cougars up 4-1.
Colby Amis drew a walk in the third inning and was later driven in by a Milan Anderson single to right field.
Newton County got another run in the fifth inning, to make the score 6-0.
In the sixth inning, the Cougars padded their lead, by scoring five unanswered runs to make the score 11-0.
Jonathan Walker to the win, while Kyle Wolfe suffered the loss.
The Cougars were led in hitting by Bout with a pair of doubles and a pair of singles. Haggan added a triple and a single, while Josh Avant tossed in a double and a single.
Lake was lead in hitting by Bryan Williamson with a pair of singles and Eric Watkins tossed in a double.
Neshoba Central 8
Newton County 4
After dropping a 6-4 decision to Kosciusko, the Rockets knew they had to take care of business with Newton County.
The Newton County Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but they were unable to hold off the Neshoba Central Rockets Saturday night.
Avant crossed the plate for the Cougars in the first inning, to put Newton up 1-0.
In the second inning, Neshoba Central took the lead, with a three run attack. Cody Morrow, Michael Smith, and Scott Fieber crossed the plate to put the Rockets up 3-1.
In the third inning, Neshoba Central scored one run to make the score 4-1, however, the Cougars got a two-run homer from Avant to cut the lead to 4-3. Avant drove in Anderson with the blast to left field.
The homer did not faze the Rockets, as they went a scored another run in the fourth, when Marrow was driven in by a Jacob Townsend double.
Newton County got its final run of the game, when Robby Carey was driven in by Ezell to make the to the game 5-4 in favor of the Rockets.
In the sixth inning, the Rockets padded its lead when Andy Smith crossed the plate on a triple by Marrow to make the score 6-4.
The Rockets got their final runs in the seventh inning, when the Newton County pitcher balked, allowing Taylor Petty to score. Michael Smith got the last run of the game, on a Allan Sisson single.
Ricky McCrary took the win for the Rockets, while Haggan suffered the loss.
Both teams will be in action Tuesday, when Newton County hosts Philadelphia and Neshoba Central travels to Noxubee County for a division battle.
