Mississippi Department of Transportation officials have begun preliminary planning on a road-widening project in Lauderdale County.
The project would widen a 7-mile stretch of Highway 493 between Broadmoor and Bailey from two lanes to five. It is contingent on allocation of federal money.
Ken Wallace, MDOT's district engineer, said an engineering survey has been completed and his staff is gathering information before acquiring land along the highway for the project.
The project will begin at Broadmoor Shopping Center at North Hills Street in Meridian and proceed north, widening Highway 493 to five lanes up to the intersection with Highway 495 at Bailey.
Wallace said work will continue to Espey-Hedgepeth Road. The highway will remain two-lane there, but the lanes and shoulders will be widened, curves straightened, hills graded and drainage improved.
Construction is expected to start in 2004 and take three years.
