MINNEAPOLIS Mike Krzyzewski didn't want to let go of Shane Battier. He hugged him for what seemed to be an eternity, a farewell embrace for his national player of the year and team leader. The top-ranked Blue Devils won their third championship and second in the Metrodome with an 82-72 victory over Arizona on Monday night.
The Raiders of Lamar School went into Monday's home baseball game against Leake Academy looking to pick up some momentum going into a big division game against Manchester Academy today. They did just that, banging out 10 hits on the way to a 14-4 win.

Brett Miller scattered four hits over seven innings and Jason Peterson scored two runs and knocked in another as Starkville whitewashed Meridian 6-0 Wednesday night at John Moss Field. The Yellow Jackets (12-8) took advantage of eight walks and two hit batsmen to put runners on base, then got three of their four hits with two outs to score their runs. Meridian coach Bill McFarland said the ineffectiveness of his two pitchers was the biggest reason for the loss.
For the second consecutive day, Lou Weddington Hart's Meridian Community College Eagles have won a golf tournament. On Wednesday, the high-flying Eagles combined to shoot a 306 to claim the 1997 Wolf Hollow Invitational at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. MCC's Robert Dreyfus fired a one-under-par 71 to win low medalist and earn a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Former Livingston University football coach and Meridian native Sam McCorkle is back on the sideline. McCorkle was named assistant coach at the Austin Peay State University, in charge of quarterbacks and fullbacks. He will also serve as recruiting coordinator.
Mississippi State used three pitchers to hold Birmingham Southern to one run Thursday and win 4-1. Gary Rath pitched five innings and struck out six to record his first career win. Carlton Loewer pitched three shutout innings and John Harden got his first save by pitching the ninth. Charlie Hicks (3-3) took the loss for the Panthers.

The Answer …
Ole Miss beat Florida 7-4 in the finals of the tournament, which was played in Oxford.
Sports Faces …
Chad Brunson
Chad Brunson is a sophomore starting catcher for the Northeast Lauderdale Trojans.
On Monday afternoon, Brunson enjoyed one of his best days at the plate getting a double and a triple against visiting Lamar School. The three-bagger broke open the contest as the Trojans went on to post the 13-2 victory.
He says he likes being a catcher.
One of the good things about the season is that Northeast has played a variety of opponents including Lamar.
