Meridian High School graduate Brian Cole, considered to be among the top prospects in the New York Mets' farm system was killed in a car crash Saturday, the team said. The 22-year-old outfielder was driving home from spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla., to Meridian, to drop off his truck. He was to fly Saturday to Binghamton, N.Y. to join the Mets' Double-A team. Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Cole's truck was hit by another vehicle near the Florida-Alabama border and he was killed almost instantly. Cole went to Meridian High School and was Baseball America's junior college player of the year in 1998 at Navarro Junior College in Texas. He was selected by the Mets in the 18th round of the 1998 amateur draft and turned down a football scholarship to Florida State.
Willis Tullos has been picked to receive the state of Mississippi's Coach Award for girls' basketball by the National Federation Coaches Association. The award, which was voted on in January, is actually for the calendar year 2000, meaning it wasn't necessarily based on what the Lady Warriors accomplished during the 1999-2000 or 2000-01 seasons.

The Southeast Lauderdale Tigers couldn't have played any better golf on Monday afternoon. At least, no SE Lauderdale golf team ever has. The Tigers shot a school-record 299 to claim the championship in the Clarkdale Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course.
INDIANAPOLIS Self-doubt was never an option, self-pity never a possibility. Fearless and peerless, Arizona simply used overtime to show why it deserved to preside over all of college basketball. Displaying the resiliency that became its trademark in the NCAA tournament, Arizona opened overtime with a 10-2 run and finished off defending champion Kentucky 84-79.

The girls in the hall thought it was an April Fool's joke. But Meridian Community College women's basketball coach Barbara Bishop was serious when she announced to a small group of her players in the Ivy Building hallway that she was stepping down. Moments later Bishop made the formal announcement at a press conference early today, that she will resign after 12 years of coaching to take on full-time teaching responsibilities at the college. Marilyn Davis, Bishop's assistant of four years, will take over.
JACKSON The 1992 baseball season has clearly been a struggle for Mississippi State. But Tuesday night the Bulldogs got a reprieve. MSU got a sacrifice fly from Matt Carpenter with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 4-3 win over Ole Miss in the Mayer's Trophy game at Smith Willis Stadium before a crowd of 6,249.

Randy Boyd Thompson
The Lamar School golf team is the defending Academy Overall State Champions. To repeat, they will need more good rounds from sophomore Randy Boyd Thompson.
He recently shot the best of round of his young golf career.
Last Tuesday at Northwood, Thompson shot an 88. A tough wind and Northwood itself combined to do a number on Thompson.
Such is not the case for No. 5 at Northwood. "I would say that's my favorite hole," he said.
As for the Raiders' repeat chances, he feels Lamar will be a factor. "We have good practices and we have a lot of talent on this team," he said.
