QUITMAN The Northeast Lauderale Trojans bounced back from a disappointing weekend to down the Quitman High Panthers 6-1 here Monday night and claim a big Division 5-4A victory. The Trojans upped their record to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the division. Going into tonight's game with the division-leading West Jones Mustangs, Northeast Lauderdale was tied for second with the winner of Monday night's South Jones-Northeast Jones game. A win at West Jones would put the Trojans in a tie for first.
Central Academy took to the road Monday and swept a doubleheader at Victory Christian. In the first game the Vikings jumped out early, taking a 6-2 lead in the first inning, before winning the contest 12-4. Central added two runs in the second and a run in the third to put the contest out of reach at 9-2. Central won the second game 13-5.

The East Central Warrior baseball team dropped its first South Division game of the season Wednesday, losing the second game of the doubleheader at Jones JC, 8-6. In game one, the Warriors (22-5, 7-1 in division) got six strong innings from Jason Latham and pounded out 12 hits to claim an 11-2 win. In the second game, the Warriors scored three runs in the top of the first, but Jones matched that in the bottom half and scored four more in the second to grab an edge it would not relinquish.
BOONEVILLE The East Mississippi Community College Lions got outstanding pitching but could only manage a split against homestanding Northeast Mississippi Community College in a key North Division doubleheader. Right-hander Veon Harris (2-3) fired a three-hitter at the homestanding Tigers in the first game, as EMCC won 4-2. While Andy Brown (2-4), also gave up just three hits to Northeast, he and his Lions lost the nightcap 3-1.

BOULDER, Colo. Mississippi coach Van Chancellor said he felt like a death row prison inmate who got a reprieve at the last minute as he watched his Rebels do battle against Penn State in semifinal NCAA Midwest regional action Thursday night. Ole Miss's Kim Gilchrist got her first field goal of the night with 30 seconds left and made it count. Her 3-pointer capped an 11-5 run and gave Ole Miss a 73-72 lead. Teammate Jackie Martin went to the free-throw line with 11 seconds remaining and sank two to clinch the victory.

Jonathan Russell
A tight strike zone and a bothersome wind made it a tough night to pitch a baseball for Quitman hurler Jonathan Russell on Tuesday night. But the junior right-hander made do by tossing five innings of shutout relief to lift the Panthers to a key 8-4 win over Northeast Jones.
Russell is now 4-1 on the season as a pitcher. He also lifted his batting average getting two more hits. He had entered the game batting .346 for the 17-4 Panthers.
Last year, Russell played for Southeast Lauderdale. He transferred when his dad got a coaching job at Quitman. Next week, he'll take on some of his buddies from Northeast Lauderdale.
Russell started out playing in Toomsuba but then later on moved to the Phil Hardin Park.
